What is Intuit Quickbooks?

Intuit Quickbooks is a well-known and popular cloud-based accounting software package consisting of nine integrated modules, of which invoicing is one. With Quickbooks Invoicing, you can invoice at multiple currency rates and use your customer’s native language on the invoice, set up automated invoicing, issue quotes with discounts and payment terms, and easily turn quotes into invoices. You can customize invoices to your company’s preference and schedule recurring payments. The Quickbooks software targets small to medium-sized businesses, with plan pricing that is reasonable and simple to understand.

Intuit is a publicly-listed US company specializing in financial software, founded 39 years ago with headquarters in Mountain View, California. The company is a multi-billion dollar business with a market capitalization that exceeds $104 billion. Intuit receives almost $13 billion in annual revenue and fields a comprehensive product line-up, including Quickbooks Online, TurboTax, Quickbooks, and the email marketing platform Mailchimp. Intuit has strong support within the US, with customers within the country supplying almost 90% of its revenue.

Intuit Quickbooks offers a complete range of business financial products, including inventory management, e-commerce, payroll, accounting, expenses management, time-tracking, and payments. The invoicing product provides an end-to-end solution for billing, beginning with online quote development and transitioning to invoices while tracking payments in real-time. You can send invoices to clients via WhatsApp for more immediate attention, and automatic reminders can prompt them for payment. Progress payments are managed, as is recurring billing. Quickbooks will automatically match bank receipts against invoices once you mark the invoice as paid.

As Quickbooks invoicing forms part of the larger Quickbooks ecosystem, your subscription covers some accounting functionality in addition to the invoicing options. The features available depend on the plan you select, with the most basic plan supporting estimates, invoices, and invoice tracking. If you need batch invoicing, or wish to add more users, you’ll need to upgrade to a higher subscription tier. All tiers include bank connections, tax management, and differing income and expense management levels. The bonus with using Quickbooks Invoicing is the ease of upgrading your business to more intensive accounting support as your business scales.

How much does Intuit Quickbooks cost?

*based on information provided by the vendor. Actual cost may vary.

Quickbooks offers four plan levels, each building on the features provided by the last. The plans are Simple Start, Essentials, Plus, and Advanced. It’s worth remembering that you don’t just get invoicing, but a range of other accounting products with these plans, and invoicing is standard in all of them.

Therefore, if you want only invoicing, buying a higher plan doesn’t gain you much other than more accounting functionality until you get to the highest Advanced plan, when the ability to batch invoices forms part of that tier.

The Simple Start plan costs $25 per month and gives you the following functionality:
Estimates, invoicing, and payments management
Income and expenses
Tax deductions
General reports and cash flow forecasts
Receipt capture and mileage tracking
Sales and sales tax
One user only

The Essentials plan costs $50 per month, giving you all Simple Start features, and adding:
Three users supported
Bill management
Employee time capture

The Plus plan costs $80 per month, giving you all Essentials features and adding:
Five users supported
Inventory management
Project tracking and profitability

The Advanced plan costs $180 per month, giving you all in the Plus plan and adding:
Up to 25 users
Batch invoicing and expenses
Workflow automation
Data restoration
A dedicated account team

Final thoughts...

The Intuit Quickbooks Invoicing module is a capable product offering basic invoicing requirements for small to medium-sized companies. You don’t get a lot of frills, but you do get integration with the larger Quickbooks suite of services. We feel that buying this product solely for invoicing is overkill, as other products will provide the same or similar services for less.

However, if you are looking for additional accounting functionality, you can’t go wrong with Quickbooks. It’s a staunch favorite of businesses worldwide and has become one of the de facto accounting packages with which most other small-business software integrates. We feel that the batch invoicing function should be made available at a lower subscription tier, but that’s a minor gripe. Overall, if you seek invoicing coupled with basic accounting, Quickbooks is one of the gold standard offerings, and we feel you can’t go wrong.
